The State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering (hereafter referred to as Laboratory) was established depending on two national key disciplines, i.e.,geotechnical engineeringandengineering mechanics in bothChina University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) and CUMT (Beijing),several provincial key disciplinesnamely disaster prevention &reduction engineering,protection engineering andgeological survey & information technology. In 2008, the Laboratory wasauthorized to start construction.Now, in order to promoteChina’s basic research and technological innovation ofgeomechanics anddeepundergroundengineering andgive full playtothe Laboratory’s function in international cooperation and high-level talentscultivation,the Laboratory has set uptheopen-end research fund to attractboth domestic and foreigntalents to work orconduct high-levelbasic researches,and make innovativeachievementby fully utilizing the resources ofthe Laboratory.

II. Key support directions of this year
Fundamental research on deep space exploration, rock dynamic characteristics and disaster mechanism in deep complex environment, water inrush disaster mechanism and prevention and control technology of deep underground engineering, high-precision seismic exploration of deep underground engineering and accurate identification of disaster sources, in-situ geophysical testing methods and technologies of deep rock parameters, high-precision imaging methods of concealed geological bodies and design of monitoring system, etc.
III. Application for the Open-end Research Fund
1. The Laboratory invitesboth domestic and overseasscholars of therelatedfield to apply for projects focusing on the major research directions of the Laboratory and the research fields supported by the Fund. The Laboratory willselect the open-end fund projects in accordance with the principle of “fairness, impartiality,merit” and procedures of free application, preliminary examination by the Laboratory, andapproval by the Academic Committee.
2.TheLaboratoryplans to set upabout20 open-end fund projects in 2019.The average fund for each project amountstoRMB 80,000yuan at most.Generally, the research period willextend for two years. The project duration is fromJanuary 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021.
3. The Laboratory gives priority to the joint application of domestic and foreign scholars with researchers in the Laboratory and the continuation of funding projects for in-depth joint research with excellent completion. The laboratory gives priorities to the projects that work at the Laboratory, and gives priorities to the projects that use the public testing platforms of the Laboratory. If there is no existing cooperation with researchers in the Laboratory at the moment of application, the applicant should declare that the research project should be jointly carried out once approved and granted.
4.At first, the applicantshould read the Notice of Application and theManagementMethod for Open-end Research Fund.The email deadline is December 28, 2019. Oncethe application form has been approved,signed and stamped by the work unitof the applicant,the applicant should send it tothe Laboratoryin two copies (both original copy, printed on both sides inanA4paperand stapled to the left) before December 28, 2019.
