On 14 October 2026, Evgenii V. Kozhevnikov, scientific head of the Laboratory of Natural Gas Hydrates at Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU), Russia, delivered a presentation at the International Conference “Modern Aspects of Deep Underground Research”. The conference was held at the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Construction and Healthy Operation and Maintenance of Deep Underground Engineering at China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) in Xuzhou, China. This event marked the third joint academic exchange between PNRPU and CUMT.
The presentation covered experimental and numerical studies of rock deformation, fracture and permeability evolution. Topics included nonlinear rock stiffness, changes in flow properties under cyclic confining pressure, and physical modelling using 3D-printed specimens.
A separate section addressed cyclic gas–water flow in quartz sand. Kozhevnikov presented experimental observations of changes in apparent water permeability during repeated gas–water displacement and methods for analyzing video recordings of the experiments. He also outlined numerical approaches to modelling gas invasion and particle transport in porous media.
The presentation identified opportunities for cooperation between PNRPU and CUMT on the recovery of low-grade geothermal energy using functional backfill in underground workings. Proposed research directions include coupled heat transfer, fluid flow and deformation in backfill materials, together with changes in their properties during thermal cycling.
