Synopsis of Workshop
Tunnels at great depth sometimes exceeding 2000 metres are being built in the mountain regions, for rail, road hydropower and mine access. Tunnelling at such great depth faces many engineering challenges. Relatively less known geological conditions and high in situ stresses complicate tunnel engineering problems. This workshop addresses some of the engineering issues faced by the tunnelling practices of deep rocks, highlights the experiences gained and engineering solutions applied. The topics of presentations and discussions will focus on problems encountered by tunnelling at great depth with examples from the Alps, Jinping, and other locations, and on new technologies in term of prediction and monitoring of rock behaviour around the tunnels.
